OSCE Date Booking – Oxford University

Covid-19 Update: 4 January 2021

The Competence Test Centre at Oxford Brookes University will remain open even though there a number of national lockdown restrictions across the UK. The safety of candidates and competence test center staff remains a priority and will continue to operate in line with Covid-secure measures. Traveling to the competence test centers to complete your Test of Competence is considered essential travel.

About the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

The OSCE is designed to assess your ability to competently apply your professional nursing or midwifery skills and knowledge in the UK. It is set at the level expected of nurses and midwives as they enter the profession (at the point of registration). This means you must show that you are capable of applying knowledge to the care of patients at the level expected of a newly registered nurse or midwife. The examination is testing your ability to apply knowledge to the care of patients rather than how well you can remember and recite facts. All the scenarios and any questions related to current best practice and you should answer them in relation to published evidence and not according to local arrangements. Oxford Brookes University provides Part 2 of the NMC’s Test of Competence on campuses in Swindon and Oxford. Oxford currently runs Monday-Friday and Swindon Monday-Wednesday.

Applying for the Test of Competence OSCE

If a candidate has a Candidate number beginning with ‘C’ then they must only sit the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) after successfully completing the Computer Based Test (CBT). If a candidate has a PRN number beginning with ’10…’, they may sit the CBT and OSCE in any order, however, most do complete the CBT first.

Please ensure that you have secured an exam date prior to making any travel arrangements to avoid disappointment. We cannot guarantee a preferred date but will be able to give options. Please contact [email protected] for all booking inquiries or [email protected]

The OSCE will simulate a clinical environment and “patient” scenarios which registered nurses and midwives are likely to encounter when they assess, plan, implement and evaluate care. Candidates are expected to utilize a contemporary evidence base and effectively demonstrate the safe practical application of nursing and midwifery skills. The Test of Competence is blueprinted against UK pre-registration standards and these standards are available on the NMC’s website.
